How To Safely Remove Ear Wax From Your Ears
Ear wax is a natural part of our body’s physiology. It coats the ear canal to lubricate it, fight off infection and helps keep dust, dirt, and other debris from getting deep inside your ear canal. However, the wax may be considered suitable for removal if the eardrum needs to be inspected to help make a medical diagnosis, if you have lost hearing sensation or if it is causing pain and/or discomfort.
You may have too much wax in your ear if:
- Your ear feels full
- Your ear is painful
- You are not hearing well
- Your ear is ringing (tinnitus)
- Your ear itches
- You have discharge coming out of your ear
- You have a strange smell or odour coming from your ear
- You feel off-balance
When to see your Audiologist
If you have any of the above symptoms, it’s important to see your GP or audiologist as soon as possible as there may be other conditions causing these symptoms. Your GP or audiologist will examine your ears with an otoscope to determine the true nature of the condition.
Micro suction versus water syringing
World of Hearing is one of the very few hearing clinics in Brisbane designed and set up to facilitate ear cleaning with the latest micro suction technique as used by Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists, while most GP’s still deliver the water syringing technique.
World of Hearing’s principal Audiologist, Karen Cooper, is one of the very few audiologist in Brisbane who can offer this safe and effective service. In some cases the use of softening agents may be required to break down long term hard wax prior to removal.
What is micro-suction and is micro-suction a safe procedure?
Microsuction is one of the safest methods to clean the ear of earwax, dry skin or infection. The procedure involves placing a small funnel in your ear canal. The audiologist uses this as a guide for the micro suction nozzle.
Specialist binocular glasses or microscopes are used to see deep into the ear canal with high magnification. This allows the audiologist to clearly see into the ears during the procedure making the treatment safe and highly effective.
Ear suction is carried out with a small micro suction nozzle attached to a low pressure machine that works like a gently vacuum cleaner. The audiologist may use small instruments like tiny scoops to help remove the ear wax.
Compared to syringing and irrigation, micro-suction is safe, effective, and comfortable. It involves no introduction of pressurized water to the ear canal and therefore removes the risk of bleeding ear canals and perforated eardrums.
We often find our micro-suction clients benefit from our hearing services, including hearing tests and hearing devices.
